New Frontier report for the Productivity Leadership Group explores innovation in the UK creative industries

The Productivity Leadership Group (PLG) – a government advisory committee of senior business leaders – has today published a comprehensive report examining productivity and the innovative capacity of the creative industries in the UK economy. Frontier (Europe) independently conducted the analysis, which focused on the issue of ‘absorptive capacity’ in the creative industries: that is, the ability of businesses to convert new ideas into commercial success.

The report, sponsored by Channel 4, is part of a broader initiative of senior business leaders led by Sir Charlie Mayfield charged by government with finding practical ways to increase the productivity of British business. The PLG has seven distinct lines of work, each led by senior business executives. One of these, improving diffusion of innovation, is chaired by Channel 4 Chief Executive David Abraham.

Of the report, Abraham said: “The report rightly acknowledges the global success and reputation of British creativity and creative businesses and considers how four steps – promoting a commercial mindset, addressing the falling half-life of skills, demonstrating to investors and policy-makers the value of outputs that are intangible and unique, and promoting a diversity of talent – could benefit all creative business but especially micro and small businesses in our sector which could match the success of the best of our global businesses.”

Frontier regularly advises organisations in the public, private and third sectors on matters of media, technology, innovation, economic growth, and commercial strategy.
