The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (Nesta) together with Creative England have today published a report detailing the scope, geography, and impact of the creative industries in the UK economy, along with an interactive data visualisation that maps the sector spatially. Frontier (Europe) served as an expert advisor on the report, providing economic data and guidance on measures of output, employment, and business counts in the UK creative industries.
Founded in 1998, Nesta is the UK’s innovation charity, which helps individuals and organisations bring their ideas to life, through programs such as research and policy, entrepreneurship, and innovation labs, among others. Creative England is a non-profit organisation that supports the TV, film, games and creative digital industries in the UK, through funding, connecting, mentoring, advocating and collaborating at all levels across the sector.
The report demonstrated that the creative industries are an increasing driver of economic growth—not just in well-established regions such as London and the South East, but throughout the UK. It also identified 47 ‘creative clusters’ spread throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, which collectively increased creative industry employment by 28% between 2007 and 2014. The reseach also found that in 9 of every 10 regions, creative industries increased their share of local businesses over the seven-year period.
