German government publishes Frontier study on landowner compensation for electricity lines

The German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BWMi) today published a study (in German) on compensation for landowners affected by expansion of the electricity network. The study, by Frontier Economics and White & Case, provides an overview of how landowners and land users affected by new electricity lines are financially compensated by network operators in Germany.

Frontier spoke with a wide range of stakeholders, including network operators, farmers’ and landowners’ associations, and the energy regulator BNetzA. The results from this study will inform the debate as to whether compensation needs to be increased, in order to accelerate grid extension projects and aid the transition to a carbon-free electricity generation mix.

Frontier regularly advices public authorities, regulators and network operators on policy issues in the energy sector.
