European Commission clears Volkswagen’s acquisition of Europcar

Last year, Volkswagen teamed up with asset manager Attestor Limited and Dutch mobility group Pon Holdings BV to buy Europcar.

With the acquisition, Volkswagen aims to extend its offering of mobility services, a market which is expected to grow significantly in the future. In April 2022, the European Commission opened a Phase 1 investigation of the acquisition to investigate potential economic effects of the vertical concentration between the upstream car manufacturer and downstream car rental firm. The Phase 1 investigation ultimately led to unconditional clearance of the acquisition.

A team from Frontier Economics advised Volkswagen on the economic aspects of the merger.
